by | Mar 1, 2021 | Firm News

Depending on your financial circumstances non profit hospitals have to forgive your medical bill debt if your income is less than 300 percent of Federal poverty guidelines which is approximately $37,000 and increases depending upon family size. In other words if you cannot afford you hospital bill and don’t have insurance or if insurance only covers a part of your bill the hospital is required under Federal law to forgive your debt.

What is debt forgiveness for a non profit hospital? In order for hospitals to keep their nonprofit status, they have to have programs in place that aid families without incomes large enough to cover their medical expenses, called Charity Care.

It can be difficult and confusing to navigate. Please call me today for a free consultation if you have any questions about this.

You can probably figure it out by entering the hospital’s name and financial assistance after it when you do your on line search.

You should be able to navigate to the hospital’s policies on forgiving debt and there should be an application you can download to apply for forgiveness of your hospital bills.
